Paula Deen's Sour Cream Biscuits: Don't try these at home!

Most of the time, I can look at a recipe and determine whether it's going to be good or not. And if it isn't, then I usually know how to tweak it next time so that it will be good. But, I’m sorry; I don’t think tweaking is going to mend this recipe! I think I’ll just stick to using my Grandma’s simple biscuit recipe!

Let me add that I LOVE Paula Deen. She’s amazing and I have tried several of her recipes and they were delicious. By watching her shows, I have picked up a few of her tips and ideas that have been very helpful to me in the kitchen. I found this recipe in the book, Christmas with Paula Deen.

The recipe is simple: 2 cups self-rising flour, 1 cup sour cream, and 1 cup butter. It’s really gooey once it’s mixed, more like cookies than biscuits. My youngest daughter, Macey, said it looked like chicken salad! She was right…it did!

First of all, the suggested temperature of 400 degrees was too hot. They were barely cooking on the inside after 8 minutes. And it was recommended to bake them for 8-10 minutes. So, I dropped the temperature to 350 degrees and kept baking. I took them out after about 12 minutes. I tasted them while they were hot…BIG MISTAKE! They were disgusting! So, I let them cool and they were better, but still not good. I ate 2 or 3….mainly because I was trying to figure out what they tasted like! Chase and Macey tasted them and spit them out! My husband and Madison wouldn't even try them.

Then, I decided to add shredded cheddar cheese to the remaining dough, thinking there may be hope! I baked those and let them cool before tasting…They were…well, a little cheesier tasting, but still BLAH!! I am now forcing myself to eat these dry floury tasting balls because I ended up with about 30 of them and I HATE to waste ingredients! I just have to remember to have something to drink nearby to get these things down...they kind of tend to get stuck in my throat!  Hmmm...I may end up using them in place of bread crumbs in meatloaf next week. Any more ideas?

She had a recipe on her website for a roll (I think it had sour cream in it too). It didn't call for yeast and you baked it in muffin cups... it was the worst thing I have ever baked. Besides that I have tried tons of her recipes and they were wonderful. I guess a recipe i love someone else might make and deem horrid!!

Heidi, these did actually suggest baking them in mini muffin cups...it may have been the same recipe! But what you said is so true...obviously someone else found these to be good or they wouldn't be in her recipe book!

I've actually never made biscuits from scratch before, so unfortunately I don't have any suggestions. Thanks for showing me a recipe that I shouldn't try though! Biscuits are one thing that I want to try soon

Hi Alison, thank you for the welcome to the Foodie BlogRoll, and for visiting me.

I can sympathize with you: I don't like to waste food, ever...if something came out badly I still eat it...my advice? What can I say...I would just gulp them down with beer of wine...on the other hand I have a lot of friends who seem to eat anything...if they have a beer to go with it...so I would take them out late afternoon, after a few rounds of beer, and they would probably disappear!!! :-)

That is so funny!!! I'll bet it was the same recipe. It was just one of those to good to be true ones.

That sucks! I hate seeing what appears to be a great recipe and having it completely suck, I have had that happen many a time. Now, I always consult my Joy of Cooking before baking a new recipe to see if it seems to make sense.
But, I'm also kind of a crappy baker, so that may also be the reason recipes seem to not work for me...lol.
My Grandma has the most bitchin recipe for dinner rolls ever, so I definitely think that you should trust your Grandma's for biscuits and never stray again. Even for Paula Deen.

I used her recipe for regular biscuits earlier this week and the dough was super gooey. You were supposed to be able to roll the dough out and use a biscuit cutter, but there was no rolling this dough out. I didn't want to waste it either, so I just did drop biscuits. They were GROSS.

I ♥ Paula too, but I've noticed some of her recipes are hit and miss. However, she has a huge hit with me with her Mashed Bake. Totally YUMMY!

I'm a kitchen sinner...I use Bisquick when I make biscuits (which is rarely).

oooh those look good!

Megan, I hope to post a good recipe soon :)

Alessandra, great idea...that would probably work!! haha

listedmal, I agree...it seems like Grandmas have the best recipes! Or is it that we just love our own Grandma's cooking?

Brandi, the Mashed potato bake sounds good! Sounds like we should go elsewhere for biscuit recipes, though!!

Holly, there's nothing wrong with Bisquick! haha! They are easy and at least you know they are going to be good!

Simply Life, they actually do look good...looks can sometimes be deceiving!!

I debated on whether to even blog about this recipe because my whole point of the blog was to share GOOD recipes, but now I'm glad I did! We all have bad experiences once in a while!! And if any of you come across this recipe, you'll know not to waste your ingredients :)

Thanks for the heads up. I am looking for a biscuit recipe to go with my sausage gravy.

Oh no! I wonder what went wrong. Maybe you could smother them with some sausage gravy? That might help them taste better!

I totally get what you mean about wasting food. I don't like to do that either.

Stoppin' by from SITS!

Also, it should be 2 sticks of butter :)

Thanks for the comment anonymous...I had to go back and look at the recipe. 1 cup of butter is equal to 2 sticks.

Paula's biscuits are delicious!!!!! You got the wrong recipe. You can check web site of Food Network, it says: 2 cups self-rising flour, 2 cups butter, and 1cup sour cream. You bake them in miniature muffin pans. I followed the recipe and the biscuits came out delicious. Sooo good
So before you trashed somebody's recipe, try to get the right amount of ingredients you need.
The worse thing is, that so many people won't try because of your comments.

Thank you for the comment anonymous! I checked Food Network's website and I have it listed exactly as they do! If you make them with 2cups of butter and they are delicious, then maybe I will try that, but that sure is a lot of butter! I also want to add that Paula Deen is still my favorite Food Network Star even if I don't care for this recipe!!
